Olympic, 34 Drawings, is a new body of 34 small scale linocut and letterpress prints and short edition self publication about the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and Paralympics, inspired by Kazmir Malevich’s 1920 low budget publication Suprematism, 34 Drawings. Completed over three years, Suprematism contained 34 original lithograph reproductions and a companion essay by the author detailing the three phases of the post revolution Russian avante-garde suprematist movement. Olympic borrows from Malevich’s aesthetic vernacular to create original prints discussing sport, identity, nationalism, and representation within the context of the media and the modern world. All 34 pieces from Olympic, as well as a companion essay, will be reproduced and compiled in the spirit of Suprematism, into a short edition self publication. Olympic will be installed and available for purchase in the Art in a Box Headquarters, within the Compound Gallery, in Oakland, CA, along side the 2014 Southern Graphics Council International.
